The weather on Sunday, October 28, 2007, was fantastic: fairly warm, sunny, clear, perfect for hiking.... and the parking lot at Monadnock (3,165 ft/965 m) reflected that: they even had to open an overflow parking to accomodate everyone. Lots of people on the trail, crowds... Many people are really hiking unprepared: in sneakers, cotton clothes, jeans, no windproof or warm jackets, no hats. It's fairly warm while you're still in the woods, but once you get above tree line, the wind is a killer: strong, cold. Many people are either braving it or turning back. Fairly high up, although still in the wooded zone, we saw an accident: a woman fell and broke her ankle pretty bad... she was surrounded either by friends/family or by volunteers and they asked everyone to try and walk around so she feels more comfortable. Since the tral is steep at times and rocky, they were waiting for a rescue crew with stretchers... and it takes some time to get the rescue crew ready and to the point of accident. We finished the hike, summited, and came down, and the woman was still at the same place up on the mountain waiting for help! Takes hours! I talked to one park ranger at the parking lot and he indicated that by the time they will bring her down, it will most likely be dark. So, she most likely spent 4+ hours on the spot where she fell, waiting for help. We ourselves didn't have any issues and had a fantastic hike. Got to the summit, spent a few minutes there (VERY windy, wind is so strong it alsmost knocks you down). Great views though, totally fantastic. Oh yeah, and it was SO CLEAR that day, that we actually saw Boston from the summit! And that's about 100 miles! Can you imagine, being able to see for 100 miles!
